Mums ONLY
Strictly After 8 pm
/l/2100/2199_s.jpg

This space is for Mums only (and Dads) and must be kept a secret from little Angels.

Be alert for the sound of pitter pattering feet and stash your stocks descretely.

A few tips -

  • Remove any crinkly wrappings tactfully in advance (before you sit down in the lounge with your hot cuppa). Clever little Angels can detect crinkly wrappers from way up the corridors.
  • Learn how to say 'back to bed little one' with a mouthful of chocolate if suddenly sprung on. Be concerned but stay discrete. One caught, you may never be safe again.
  • If caught, you may think some foods may taste 'spicy', 'bitter' or 'taste just like spinach' if you know what I mean. (Your taste buds are just a bit confused after your long day)!

Hot Creamy Carob & Maple Syrup Egg Nog Drink

This drink is sooooo yummy and perfect for a cold winters night.

Ingredients

1 Egg, 2 mugs milk, 2 heaped tbsp Carob powder, dash of cream and Maple syrup

Method

Get all your ingredients out ready next to the stove so you can add bits and continue the 'whisking'.

Whisk the egg in a saucepan and add the milk while you keep whisking. Turn the stove on to start heating up. It is important to keep whisking while it is heating up so the egg does not go lumpy. While whisking put carob powder in too. Heat until the temperature is perfect for a hot drink. Just at the end, add your dash of cream and whisk for a few seconds more. Now pour into 2 mugs. Add Maple syrup to taste. MMMmmmm (The standing in a cold kitchen at night is definately worth it).

Alternative : Coco powder could be used though carob is better at night as coco or chocoalte may keep you awake all night.

Warning : This drink can be very addictive so as a naturopath I recommend to not have more than once a week.

Chai Tea - Posted 25th June 2007

(One for Mums, Dads & big people only)

Chai Tea is so nourishing and warming for those cool winter days. Belinda's Chai Tea mix is easy to make for a quick cup of Chai tea as you have all the ingredients, powdered and mixed before hand.

Ingredients

5 tsp ground Cinnamon
5 tsp ground Ginger
2 tsp ground Cloves
3 tsp ground Cardamom Pods
1/2 tsp ground Peppercorns
3 tsp ground Fennel seeds
2 tsp ground Licorice root
10 tbsp Black Formosa Tea

Mix all of the ingredients together. Store in a glass jar with an air tight lid.

To make tea for one - Cover 1/2 tsp of spice/tea mix with boiling water and allow to steep for 3-5 minutes.

Serve with honey/sugar and milk or soy milk.

Note : Chai tea is not recommended in Pregnancy unless you have advise from your Naturopath.

May keep you awake so probably best consumed earlier in the day.

Sarah's Mulled Wine

The weather is just right at the moment for lovely spicy, fruity mulled wine by the fire side(If you are lucky enough to have one). This recipe came from my sister's friend, Sarah, from back in the days when we used to go to Medieval Fairs.

Ingredients
1-2 cinnamon sticks
6-8 cloves
6-8 cardamom pods
1-2 inches of ginger(sliced)
2-3 nutmegs plus any combination of fennel seeds, allspice, licorice root and any other spices you have on hand
2L fruit juice
sliced apple, pear and orange (with skin on)
2L red wine

Place first 8 ingredients in a big pot and simmer until it smells delicious and the fruit is beginning to soften(about 10-15 minutes). Then add the wine and heat gently until warm enough to stay hot until you have finished a glass (or goblet) full. Serve with bits of stewed fruit in the glass.
For a slightly more potent brew you can add a cup or two of Stones green ginger wine when you add the red wine.
All quantities are approximate, and the type of fruit juice and wine will greatly change the final taste. Feel free to add a bit of honey to taste if you are using a dry red and experiment until you get it just as you like it. For the less adventurous, I usually go for orange juice and Lambrusco.

Mid Morning Tea Time!

Traditional Lemon Butter

Homemade Lemon butter is so tasty on some warm fruit toast or freshly baked bread with a nice cup of tea!

2 large organic lemons (Juice of)

1 tsp of grated lemon skin (zest)

2 organic eggs (whisked)

2 cups sugar

4 oz butter

Use a double saucepan (one smaller saucepan inside of another with  2 inches of water in the bottom pan). This is so the lemon butter mix does not boil or else it will curdle.

Put all of the ingredients into the saucepan and stir on a low temperature, to melt all the butter. Add the lemon zest. Keep stiring until the mixture has thickened.

Pour into 2 clean jam jars and seal with lids.

Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
